Release r29 - Personal goals

Introducing personal goals, a new feature that makes it easier to focus on goals you, as a person, find important.

Release r29 - Personal goals

The philosophy behind Todo2d is that true progress isn't measured by the size of goals but by the small incremental steps toward it. With the release of r29 comes "Personal Goals", which is part of the personal feature set (which is completely free) and makes it easier to focus on a goal.

We are public about the changes we make to Todo2d. If you want to know what has changed you can read it in the changelog.

The advantage of a two dimensional map is that it's easier to organize, however when you attempt to get things done, all you are interested in is what you need to focus on next. This is the reason why the 2d maps can hide blocked tasks. However that might result in a situation in which you more than one task that you can start with, which requires you to make a decision.

Personal goals fixes that problem for you by giving you a list instead of a map. Due to the fact that it's personal you can also change the order (although we don't allow you to put a blocked task before an unblocked task) without affecting others.

Case Study: Deconstructing a Complex Goal

Consider the goal "Launch an online course", this is clearly a big project and has many steps, so you prepare. You know you need to start with creating an "outline for the course" and "determine price". And once you have done that you can start working on creating lectures and create a product in the payment system.

Due to the unique feature of Todo2d, we can connect related tasks to another so that we always know which tasks needs to be done first. In this case, we have two starter tasks:

  • Starter Task 1: Outline the course.
  • Starter Task 2: Determine the price.

And two blocked tasks:

  • Blocked Task A: Draft the lesson modules (Blocked by Starter Task 1 completion).
  • Blocked Task B: Create product in payment system (Blocked by Starter Task 2 completion).

Each time a starter task is completed, the system will attempt to any blocked tasks to the starter category. When all of these four tasks have been completed we have reached our goal of "Launching an online course".

In screenshots the difference becomes a whole lot clearer.
